Cap hits of 2009:
1. Marty booker- $250,000 Unamortized signing bonus
2. Linebackers Gilbert Gardner and Marcus Riley were also released. No cap hits
3. john tait retires- $4.8 mill salary saved $500,000 unamortized signing bonus

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 1/2
If you don't mind me asking, where did you find the details for Harrison's base salary? Rotoworld had it as undisclosed. There's a couple other people like that when I was making my rough estimate that I couldn't find. Would be nice to have another source of intel if I do a rough one again next season :)
Wins - @GB, @Seattle, Detroit, @Cincinnat, Cleveland, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Green Bay, Minnesota, @Detroit
Losses - Pitt, @Atlanta, Arizona, @San Francisco, @Minnesota, @Baltimore Prediction: 10-6(Best/Worst case +/- 1)

SZOMP:Thanks for the info. Your always ontop of things.
No problem.. And keep in mind a few players like tait, ogun etc are either going to have to restucture or be cut, so we probably will be gaining more space in feb/march when cuts/roster bonuses due..last year it was griese, moose, walker miller, arch rmj.. all going to give us more space..
i'd also say players like mcgowan and rex will not get offers from bears

Its the last year of his deal from 2002( and back then Usually had bigger salaries at end).. I really doubt Bears will pay him the $4.8 mill salary,, he will either restructure or be cut, he's one of the "cap savings" that will happen, but until actually happens and how, its the much higher number for now

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 1/2
BearsMod18:DB, do you think we will pay Ogun that money? or would he be a restructure or cut? and same for Vash
think both ogun and tait are gone if they do not restruture.. Vasher a little tough ebcuase unlike tait/ogun who are in their last year ofdeals, vasher still has 4 years left,, so his unamortized cap # is $7.6 million, so that is a big cap hit, doubt they do that..

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 1/2
bears free agents in 2009:
1. rex grossman
2. john st. clair
3. mike brown
4. marcus hamilton
5. brandon lloyd
6. kevin jones
Bears in last year of contracts:( that may be worth locking up or not)
1booker
2. m anderson
3. izzy idonije
4.olin kreutz
5.patrick manelly
6. D. manning
7. A. ogunlaye
8. kyle orton
9. brandon riddea
10. John tait
11. matt toeinia
12 . Jamar wiliams
13 A. peterson
======================================
IMO, of the free agents, you make an offer to mike brown based on playing time incenetives( as ask him to be the Db coach if he's done), and make a try at st/ clair for his versalitiy along line( he's not a starter BUT very good depth guy for both guard and tackle, and all teams need that, will depend on price).. rest will be gone.. can't imagine lloyd back
Of the last year guys, only izzy i'd want to see locked up before Free agency..he's a valuab;e part of the d-line rotation AND ST, and will get offers if we let him get to F/a.. Manning intrguing, esp with his ST play, but again i'd let that go into oct and see how he does to start 2009, before any offer. olin/tait/ogun on last legs literally and think they may not be here even in 2009, much less extensions

Definitely lock up Izzy. Don't forget Mannelly, he is the definition of consistency at long snapper.

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 1/2
In order to have the bears back on the right track (playoff team), we need to get rid of Lovie Smith or demote him and hire mike shanahan... Mike Shanahan was fired from the broncos and will be a prefect fit for chicago... Mike grew up outside of chicago and he knows how build a team using the westcoast offense system... that is the best possible way i can see it.. along with that he did win back to back superbowls something mr. ditka couldn't do...

Thanks for the earlier answer. As far as who we resign, I think you could add Lloyd to that but after JA's comments I don't know. He falls into the "players not playing hard" comment JA made. However, we have next to nothing in depth. He's easily our second best WR right now. For 2010, I think Peterson is probably worth resigning to a small deal. I agree on Izzy. Possibly Toe too. I'd like to see us cut Ogunleye and use the $2-3 million we save to persue peppers or suggs. I don't really see us keeping Ogunleye at all. Its obvious we need to upgrade that position. So, if we sign some one he's not really of a use. I suppose we could restructure and then draft someone but DE is a position rookies can come in and play. So, I think he's the most likely person to be cut. Tait is obviously the second most likely but I could see us keeping him if he restructures. I see us draftinng a RT in the 3rd or 4th round. We need someone in front of them in case they aren't ready. So, I could see Tait or possibly St. Clair filling that position. I would prefer if we got a guy like Vernon Carey.
I think with Peppers/Suggs and Carey we'd have 5-6 million left. Not much but we could sign a cheaper vet QB

Yeah can see both tait/ogun needing restrtutures or gone, and agree about a Pass rusher, either in F/A or Draft... Also keep in mind if we decide to make a splash in F/a we do have an "ace-in-the-hole"
These contracts last year structured to give the bears maximum flexibility, and while they don't want to do all the time( because will create dead cap issues later on)..we have rosters bonuses totalling alittle over $20 million..( briggs$ 4.75 mill+hester $5 mill+ harris $6.67 mill+ gould $2.15 mill+ davis $400K+$ 1.126 mill c. cwillams).
toal roster bonuses= $20.09 million
So we could change even let's say briggs and tommie( or hester) Roster bonus into a signign bonus( both indy and new england used this to save cap money with brady and manning recently), and create rough;y another $8 million in space on just those 2( you take the roster bonus and divide it by years left to the yearly cap cost and subtract from total to get saving for 2009)..

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 1/2
This is a great post..very informative. I can see 15 or 20 mil added to that bottomline with no problem. Harris for sure Tait Vasher Tillman as possiblities. This is going to be a tricky year due to the possibility of next year may be uncapped..if thats the case players may be signing 1 yr contacts or extensions to have their names out there when the market goes nuts.

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 1/2
How much do you think a legit #1 wide receiver, i.e. Houshmandzadeh, would take, and would it be worth it to commit that much cap space? Also, if McNabb is in play how much do you think he would take to come to Chicago? Personally I'd be willing to see a big chunk go there and try to fill most of the other holes throught the draft.

it would prob take $45-55 million 6 yr conrtact ,, which would be roughly 5.5 mill cap hit for 2009

Re: Acounting for Marcus Hamliton's unearned LTBE incentives
VicF:I read in one of the Chicago papers that at the deadline the Bear's gave Hamilton (a Exclusive Rights FA) an $8M incentive if he made some unobtainalbe number of special teams tackles... How is that accounted for in th numbers....
actually it was said on score, not in papers and I was never able to verify it- so I do not think it was legit( there is a surprise).. ESPn cap mubers also don't have FWIW( the differrence between my number and theirs Is I have the LYBE's and ULTBE"s and they don't), but we are within 300,000 after backin them down.

Black and Blue (salary) caps
January 5, 2009 7:00 PM
Posted by ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert
The offseason has arrived for all four NFC North teams, and usually the first question fans have is where their teams stand in terms of the salary cap.
Thanks the magic of ESPN, I can bring those figures to your computer screen. The numbers below are current but don't reflect the credits and adjustments that occur just prior to the beginning of free agency.
In order:
Detroit: $26.8 million Minnesota: $20.4 million Green Bay: $19.09 million Chicago: $17.4 million
What do these numbers mean? Nothing more than the fact that none of the Black and Blues will be particularly constrained this offseason by cap considerations. They'll each be able to make the moves they want to make.
We'll have much more on the player movement season as the playoffs continue. But I wanted to get these numbers to you right away.
