    Kerry Wood

This was the equivalent of releasing Mike Brown. KW was their team leader and devoted a lot of time helping our community. Bad move by Hendry:

    | Tribune staff reporter

It might have been the most difficult call of his career, but Jim Hendry's decision Thursday to let Kerry Wood leave the Cubs to seek a better deal elsewhere was made with his head, not his heart.

After acquiring Florida reliever Kevin Gregg for Double-A pitcher Jose Ceda, Hendry reluctantly announced the club would not try to re-sign Wood, who is seeking a multiyear contract.

"Honestly, we feel for his own good, and for the good of him and his family, there is going to be a longer and more lucrative deal somewhere else than there would be here now," Hendry said. "And it would be unfair to keep it dangling for another month or so and say, 'Let's see where the ownership situation is going, let's see what happens if we don't do this, we may do that.'

"He has been such a good citizen the last couple of years and always has come back to us for less money, and the chance to make up the difference he left on the table, taking the ball through thick and thin. And I really feel like the right thing to do for him and his family is don't put him in a situation where he'd have to do that again."

Wood will be just fine closing for the Brewers next season.

the cubs held kerry too long and last season proves it

I would have traded him early last season

    Re: Kerry Wood

I think that we could have gotten him for a lot cheaper than anybody else could have. I heard that teams were not even considering him an option in the offseason because they were so sure that he was gonna sign with the cubs... no matter what the offer was.

But we should do fine with out him (don't really like the reliever they traded for, but whatever)
