2016 Olympics - means end of tailgating in Chicago

If anyone has seen the plans, the 31st st. lot - gone.  The hospital - gone.

Football tradition is under attack.  Let's hope we don't get the Olympics.  30 days worth of track and field isn't worth the end of the tradition.

Even if we don't get the Olympics.....at least half of the 31st street lot is going away.

Unfortunatly, the election of Obama only increases the chances of Chicago getting the Games.

Daley has always hated Tailgating.  Obama claims he is a Bears fan, but I'd bet he has never been to a game &/or Tailgated.

To respond to your thoughts in a different thread......  I wish they had built a brand new Soldier Field where Meigs Field was.  Then they could have leveled the old Soldier and turned the whole thing into a huge park/field that could be used for unlimited Tailgating Spaces.

With or without the Olypmics - I think the blighted 31st lot will eventually be gone.  And likely sooner, rather than later.  Going to the game is about the entire day - the anticipation of kickoff, cooking, eating, and drinking together in the cold.  I just have a depressed feeling when I think about it. One thing I was wondering was just how much would it cost to rent school busse(s) to take people to and from the game?  I am getting ahead of myself, but I invision someday where hundreds, if not thousands of Bears fans tailgate up at Montrose Harbor, where you have acres and acres of parkland - you're on the lakefront, and where there is plenty of free parking.  Sure alcohol is technically not allowed, but there can be ways around that.  If a "football club" has to, we can consider this in the future.  Either that, or fork over $140 for a frickin' S. Lot pass.  And if 31st st. goes, that $140 will be more like $250

Re: 2016 Olympics - means end of tailgating in Chicago

Any Architect will tell you that there is really nothing special about Soldier Field.  The material used for the collonades is nothing great.  That said, you could have kept the wall and colonades up, and gutted it and made it into a rememberance park or something.  As for a parking lot.  There is no way that makes sense.  That area is part of the Chicago Park District, and it is difficult for the Park District to put a parking lot there.  And quite frankly, it probably wouldn't look right.

When we were fed the new Soldier Field plans, we were introduced to a "Stadium in a Park" concept.  The renderings showed people picknicking outside on the lawn, throwing footballs around, etc.  Correct me if I'm wrong - but the cops don't want any fans doing ANYTHING on the grass surrounding the area.

Re: 2016 Olympics - means end of tailgating in Chicago

It will take a 100 million dollars up front money from Daley before this gets off the the ground .

    A)  I dont think Daley can raise this $$$ since other economic social programs are suffering

    B)  I highly doubt obama/ Fed Gov.  would suport or help finance this program because of the chance of failure ( post olympics )

C ) Detroit has held the highest crime rate along with chicago, that being said there is no way on earth ANYONE is going to take the risk out on the streets.

Re: 2016 Olympics - means end of tailgating in Chicago

I'm not worried about tailgating.  Jerry Reinsdorf is sitting on thousands of parking spaces that aren't making any money during the majority of the NFL season.  If/when the 31st street lot closes for good it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see tailgating move to the Cell.

Re: 2016 Olympics - means end of tailgating in Chicago

What a great idea!  Tailgate at the Cell......then take a shuttle bus to Soldier.

I was at the Redskins @ Lions game a couple weeks ago.  Most of the lots around Ford Field are like the South & Waldron (i.e. open 4 hours before kickoff, tons of rules & restrictions and the ones in Detroit don't even allow charcoal).  However, they have a lot called the Eastern Market.  It's a little further from the stadium than the 31st is from Soldier.  That lot opens as early as you want to get there.  It has some spots that you can use more space, you have the option to purchase an extra spot(s), very few rules or restrictions, etc....  After Tailgating - - - you jump on a shuttle bus ($5 round trip) that drops you off a block from the stadium.

Daley doesn't need to raise $100 million.  He can tap into the zillions he got for the skyway which hasn't been used or tap into the zillions he'll get for privatizing Midway or have corporations donate to a fund, sort of like Millenium Park was built.

And Obama...he'll be for it because it will create revenue and jobs in the city.  Even if the city lost money, some in the city like bars, hotels, restaurants, advertisers, media and such would make money off the event.

And as for streets being dangerous what neighborhood do you live in?  Only a few neighborhoods are in a gang war, you make it sound like the city is under siege.

I like the idea of a Montrose Harbor club

Sorry pal    These buisneses are not a savings acount for daley to make a withdraw?

and YES crime is spread easily throught the city ( not just a few neighborhoods)

why do you think Los angeles and lake placid/ utah have been chosen first to host the olympics ??

This has been talked about before on a few sports radio programs, you dont have to take my opinion but I strongly advise you call a few stations and get a reality check on this topic.
