AP IMPACT: Clunker pickups traded for new pickups

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091104/ap_on_bi_ge/us_cash_for_clunkers

Looks like a few shady deals were done, wonder how they will handle the punishments if they find these to really have happened.

I wonder how many people got a new vehicle they couldn't afford.

as the article says about the vehicles that were traded in for vehicles that got the same or less fuel mileage, i guess we wait and see what the investigations find out.  Butto make a big deal out of the fuel mileage part of it, I thought the main purpose of the c4c deal was to promote job growth, and the fuel mileage thing was just a happy side effect of it.

So, as usual, somepeople found a way to abuse the system.  This allows those looking for ANY way to critisize to say it was a "failure".

I guess our banking system should have been shut down because people wrote bad checks.

I thought since gov't programs were run so "efficiently" issues like this wouldn't happen.

actually in the article, it states that the government thinks they may have been just typos on the dealer end of it, and is investigating....my question is I wonder what happens to 1. the dealer 2. the federal employee that ok'd the deal 3. The person that purchased the vehicle.

Plenty, I'm sure.  Remember, everyone deserves a new home, everyone deserves a new car.  Unfortunately, reality says this isn't the case.  Some people, based off their bring-home pay, would be better off renting and driving their old vehicle for longer.  But that doesn't satisfy the "I WANT IT NOW" mentality a lot of folks seem to have.  In a few years, I'm sure we'll hear reports on the "car-loan fiasco".

C4C, on paper, was a good program. But when you take into consideration the ripe for abuse factor, the rush to implement it that made the ripe for abuse factor even greater...it was just a corporate welfare package. Not much different than TARP, really.

Relying on EPA estimates was a real laugher, from both a buyer and seller standpoint. The story quotes an 87 Suburban with an 18 MPG rating. You have to be kidding me. On what planet??? That thing would not get 18MPG if you dropped it off a skyscraper, LOL

EVERY program is "ripe for abuse".   Singling this one out just because you don't like the fact that Obama is a better president than your guy is just silly.

There are multiple programs that could be singled-out.

yeah, I don't think the EPA had a real handle on the whole MPG rating deal....I don't think they had a large enough sampling of each vehicle to make an accurate number to be honest lol...like ya say an 87 suburban gettin 18 mpg...prolly not happening unless its sliding on ice for 10 of them miles with the engine idling or possibly shut off lol.

EPA estimates have been a joke for decades. The vehicles have been 'labratory tested'. That means they strap the thing to a dyno and simulate real world driving. As a result, the ratings have been notoriously high forever.

But I'll take a gubmint job driving cars around anyday. That would be better than the joke testing they have now. Just don't complain if I try to smoke the tires on every test vehicle I get my hands on, LOL.

I have posted this before, why does the turbo diesil engine that VW uses on the Jetta Sport Wagon/Golf Estate in the UK get 78MPG but in the US only get 40MPG?  The EPA!

The same reason an 87 Suburban is rated at 18 MPG. LOL
