since the early 1980's when the NFL was first shown on Brit TV. There's a fair few of us in the UK who have been Bears fans since then.

jack, everyone is a  new fan at some point. Even the guys that have supported them close on 50 years. The important thing is keep following the team no matter what.

I got into the Bears 82/83, and after the 85 SB win we've had more lean times than good times. But I'm still here. Still a Bear. Hell I even started a blog on the Bears.

Re: How long have you been a Bears fan?

It was 1981.  I put it on my bio...

I was watching a game between the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys.  Some guy by the name of Tony Dorsett was carrying the ball when I turned on the game.  He broke one for about 30 yards or something.  I sat down and watched the D dig in.  I loved the simplicity of the Blue and Orange.  The majesty of the helmet, and that of the helmets hitting... HARD.

They held this America's team, and then it shifted to the offence.  #34.  Almost enough said.  He was just brilliant.  Just sweetness.  It was riveting, crazy so.  Never seen anything like it.  High step, catching out of backfield... getting stopped, no, not stopped... working, working, working.

It was dirty.  It was ugly.  It was beautiful.

I said, "This will be my team."

I am a high school teacher and my walls are adorned with much Bears stuff.  I teach journalism, ironically, and one of the first things I teach is, There is the Bears, and then there is the news.  They all understand.  During the season, every Monday, I wear a Bears jersey.  I have Waddle, I have Thomas, I have Jones, I have Urlacher x 2...I have Blue, orange and white... and if I'm cut, those are the colors I bleed.

    What a fun thread.

Re: How long have you been a Bears fan?

The truth?--43 years, but at a distance. Not to offend any die-hard Bears fans, but with the distance between, & no early days coverage like Bears.com, it was tough trying to follow a team that you did'nt get to watch, or sports pages that never really talked about the Bears, except the stats, in the game review. Or, when the Bears would really shine. There are actually quite a few Bears fans here. From the 1983-4 teams--(held out Super Bowl year)--Todd Bell #25--SS was from my home town, Middletown, Ohio--& the Bears were getting a lot of  TV time. I still respect Todd--(nice guy), even though I realize, he made a big mistake listening to his agent--(Lee Steinberg?) & missing out on the ring. That Super Bowl ring was just an inch away the year before, & much more precious than that money he wanted!--(Grr--#### 49ers), & everybody with any football knowledge, could see that it was inevitable, the Bears would win it! They were just too tough! & one of the greatest teams ever! When I was 8 years old, it was 1965. My whole family was Browns fans--(the local team)--But me, being the rebal-(lol) loved the Bears! With Gale Sayers & Dick Butkus in that draft class, & Kansas City also drafting Sayers in the old AFL draft, & starting a bidding war with the Bears, I was excited to see him sign with Chicago! The Bears really had everyone interested at that time! & what can you say about Butkus? He was a total madman out there! Cursing at, & saying all sorts of nasties to QB's! Intimidation! That was what he was all about! You had to deal with "Captan Caveman"--as I have sometimes called him. I have a ton of old pictures of him. Some of them are obvious, that the lineman in the shot was going for his knees. & as you know, there are classic films of his & Gale's injuries. That was a sickening day in San Francisco, watching them carry Sayers off the field. I know, it's part of the game, but you still hate to see it. Anyway~~~Thanks for the welcome I've recieved here. Bears fans are great! It seems like most guys on TV, who are fans---are Bears fans! Chicago surely leads the NFL with major celebrities.--GO BEARS!!! Have a great year!---Jon--(also a Bengals fan--poor me--lol) Who Dey???--"Gonna arrest this year?"
