So now that we know the new cap is higher than what was estimated, now officially at $127 million, where does that leave the Bears now, at 40 million under?

yeash we are $38 million under no( i had our estimate higher alreasdy at 125 not the 123 many were using) .. and this explains as suspected why so mnay signed before F/a, teams knew this extra money coming last week

Salary cap expands to $127 million for 2009 By Adam Schefter

The salary cap will grow in 2009.

Because teams didn’t spend as much as they were supposed to under the collective bargaining agreement the past three years, teams were notified Wednesday that the salary cap will increase over $4 million to $127 million for this coming year, according to sources with two NFL teams. The collective bargaining agreement calls for cap adjustment down if teams spend over the cap in cash and adjustment up if they don’t spend up to the cap.

It defies the recession and logic, but just before free agency, teams actually will have more flexibility and salary-cap room. This is tremendous news for teams such as the Colts and Panthers, who are pressed against the cap, and not such good news for teams such as the Buccaneers and Chiefs, who were way under the cap. Now their advantage is somewhat compromised.

Teams believed they would see a mild increase in the salary cap, but this is bigger than teams expected.

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 1/2

As we roll toward the opening of free agency this evening there isn't quite the anticipation there was a year ago when the Bears had a handful of players entering the open market. The action started with the team doing what it could to keep wide receiver Bernard Berrian. When that mission failed, the Bears put the squeeze on linebacker Lance Briggs, getting him to return at their price while some key role players (who were missed last season) departed in special teamer Brendon Ayanbadejo and tight end John Gilmore.

There just won't be that kind of drama this weekend, at least not that we see right now peering into our crystal ball. A phone call to Miss Cleo might confirm our hunch. It's important as we move forward to take stock of where the team is right now with the salary cap. We've reviewed the information when it comes to the 2009 salary cap, which was referenced in this story today, and have the cap numbers for projected starters. This provides an idea how the Bears have budgeted and where they're at. It's similar in many ways to how the money was distributed last season.

    Brian Urlacher
has the highest cap figure on the team at $10,185,505. In fact, Urlacher combined with Tommie Harris at $9,090,000 come in at $19,275,505, a little less than $3 million shy of the projected offensive starters as a whole. That was one of the questions we wanted to get to with general manager Jerry Angelo last weekend in Indianapolis--would he do the Urlacher $18 million extension over again given the chance? We fell short in that mission and that's a question for another day and a post for another day as well. Here are the numbers:

Salary cap figures for projected 2009 starters

    Offense

    WR Devin Hester $6,885,833
    C Olin Kreutz $4,133,333
    TE Desmond Clark $2,174,446
    LT Chris Williams $1,883,530
    WR Rashied Davis $1,581,666
    RG Roberto Garza $1,565,000
    QB Kyle Orton $1,420,000
    FB Jason McKie $995,000
    RB Matt Forte $775,613
    LG Josh Beekman $565,405
    Right tackle ?

    Total $21,979,826

    Defense

    MLB Brian Urlacher $10,185,505
    DT Tommie Harris $9,090,000
    WLB Lance Briggs $6,766,666
    DE Adewale Ogunleye $6,465,576
CB Nathan Vasher $4,866,666 or CB Corey Graham $504,655
    CB Charles Tillman $4,716,666
    DE Alex Brown $2,884,594
    DT Anthony Adams $1,087,500
    SS Kevin Payne $504,780
    FS Craig Steltz $503,756
    SLB Nick Roach $460,000

    Total with Vasher $47,531,709
    Total with Graham $43,169,698

Kreutz and Wale should restructure. What a waste.

PS We need a stud Safety on the team.

I truly believe we will get TJ Hous Yo Mama, or another #1 WR. Hester isn't a #1

    I think we'll grab a DE like Price and a couple OT's

I am staying up all night expecting some breaking news

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 1/2

The Bears have made their first move toward filling some of the obvious holes on their roster by signing offensive lineman Frank Omiyale to a four-year contract.

Omiyale, who spent the last two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, has signed a deal worth between $11.5 million and $14 million, according to an NFL source.

He got his first real NFL action this past season when he filled in for Panthers left tackle Jordan Gross for the Oct. 5 game vs. Kansas City. Carolina won 34-0, piling up 205 yards rushing. Omiyale, 26, can play either tackle position and could probably move inside also. The 6-4, 310-pounder was originally a fifth-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons in 2005 out of Tennessee Tech. The Panthers claimed him off waivers in 2007 and he had been a backup there.

Omiyale's signing increases the odds that veteran John St. Clair, who turns 32 this summer, will not return. The Bears typically have players they want back under contract before free agency opens and instead of going with the familiar option who has started 19 consecutive games for them, they chose to look elsewhere first.

Omiyale's signing may give the club flexibility in the first two rounds of the draft where it is still expected it will at least consider an offensive tackle. Getting a lineman on board quickly was paramount. The Bears will run veteran minicamp starting March 16 and Chris Williams, the first-round pick from last year, was the only tackle under contract with NFL experience.

Ten-year veteran John Tait is still expected to retire, but there's been no official word about him filing paperwork

Jones receives a $500,000 signing bonus, a $500,000 roster bonus this month and a $1 million base salary in 2009. Next year, he'll get a $350,000 workout bonus and a base salary of $1.15 million.

    so his cap # is

2010-350,000 work out bonus, $1.15 salary.

John St. Clair-T- Bears Mar. 9 - 8:42 pm et

Bears beat writer Brad Biggs expects a resolution between the team and free agent OT John St. Clair by the end of the week.
St. Clair isn't getting much interest elsewhere and Chicago can guarantee him a starting job at right tackle, so it's likely he'll return. The 32-year-old figures to command a three-year deal in the $12-15 million range.

metcalf cut,,, we take a cap hit of $1.749 mill of unamortized SB, but save 1 mill of salary, so cost .749,000 of space but rid of the lard butt

     Terrence Metcalf-G- Bears Mar. 4 - 8:32 am et
The Bears re-signed OL Terrence Metcalf for six years and $12.5 million.
The deal includes a $3.5 million signing bonus. He'll battle Roberto Garza, who's also a locked up long-term, for a starting guard spot. The Bears are in good shape on the interior offensive line.

    Josh Bullocks-DB- Bears Mar. 11 - 4:30 pm et

Bears signed S Josh Bullocks to a one-year, $1.2 million contract. $525,000 of the deal is guaranteed.
Bullocks, 26, lost his starting job to Kevin Kaesviharn in New Orleans two years ago because he was weak in coverage. He'll compete to start at free safety with 2008 fourth-round pick Craig Steltz, who has a similar profile.

The Bears have announced that cornerback Marcus Hamilton has signed his one-year tender as an exclusive rights free agent.

Hamilton will earn $385,000 this season.

Strong-side linebacker Nick Roach is the club's only other exclusive rights free agent. He has not signed his tender yet

Re: Acounting for Marcus Hamliton's unearned LTBE incentives

    Got love 4 Da Bears!

I'm also a big fan of bringing in J. Bullocks on a 1 year deal. This kid is only 26 and has proven durable with center field skills + I think he is a potential diamond in the rough, who the Bears will look to lock up long term once he proves he fits in the system!

I also like bringing back K Jones to compliment Forte. IMO KJ was rushing back from a serious knee injury and I think he should improve and give the Bears a legit 1-2-3 punch.

Yes, get G Wolfe involved in the offense. Figure it out bc he is a weapon capable of making big plays.

    Go Bears!

    Omiyale..(Not sure if I spelled it right..lol)
Was a decent pickup since he might end up filling a G spot for us.

I like the Kevin Jones signing not sold on Bullocks though.

Hopefully we end up Picking up Holt I am not getting my hopes up though.
Looking forward to the Draft hopefully OT and WR  are our first two picks.

Payne gets nice check from performance-based pay program...........

    | | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

Lovie Smith has never shied away from putting young players on the field and that ultimately puts them in position for an end-of-season windfall.

Safety Kevin Payne received one of the larger bonuses around the league in the performance-based pay system. The safety who started all 16 games last season picked up a bonus check of $302,218, largest on the team by a wide margin. It doesn't quite match his base pay from last season of $370,000, but it's a nice chuck of change to pick up in the offseason.

    The NFL began a performance

    The other top Bears:

    Left guard Josh Beekman $239,000
    Cornerback Corey Graham $226,000
    Linebacker Nick Roach $184,000

Almost a week after the Bears concluded their minicamp with a player they wanted to play at left guard manning the right tackle position, they have found an offensive tackle.

The club has agreed to terms with veteran Kevin Shaffer on a three-year contract. The 29-year-old was released earlier this month by the Cleveland Browns, who essentially replaced him with John St. Clair. Check back soon for more details.

Shaffer agreed to terms on a three-year, $8 million contract. He is guaranteed $2 million and is scheduled to make $2.75 million for the 2009 season. That's a tad above the $2.65 million he was scheduled to earn as a base salary with the Browns for '09. He was due a $1 million roster bonus before being released.

Shaffer will fly in from Cleveland on Thursday and will take a physical before signing the contract. He will receive a $1.75 million signing bonus and will earn $2.75 million in the first year of the contract. The Browns had tried to keep him but they wanted him to reduce his salary first. The sides talked about it for four days before Shaffer instructed his agent Alan Herman that he wanted out. Herman contacted general manager Jerry Angelo immediately, and the agent hammered out a deal with contract negotiator Cliff Stein Tuesday and today.

    So his cap number is:

    583,000(SB) + 1 million salary= $1.583 mill  ( $1.75 SB)
