Chargrilled. Unless it's a brat, in which case beer boiled with onions then finished on the grill. Also, I substitute tabasco for ketchup on my 'dogs.

Beer Brats, perfect for tailgating.

Combine beer, brown sugar, soy sauce, mustard, chili powder, garlic and hot pepper sauce. Place brats in shallow baking dish; pour marinade over. Reserve marinade for what?

Reserve marinade as an option to pour over the brats after grilling.

I'm the opposite. I like to brown the brats on the grill and finish them off in a beer bath with onions and green peppers. And I prefer my dogs boiled or steamed.

Huh. Never tried that. I'd guess it allows the beer/onions/peppers to permeate the brat more easily?

I don't know. It's just the way I've always done it. I've seen it done both ways and I don't think either way is better than the other. I guess I should try sometime to cook some both ways and see which ones come out better.

What part of Chicago are you from?
Back to the original question- only a Philistine would put ketchup on a hot dog.

Re: Ketchup on a hot dog???
Throughout the world, there are numerous variations in hot dog condiments. Some of these are mustard, ketchup, pickle relish, onion, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and chili peppers. They are usually served in a bun.[citation needed]
In the United States, the National Sausage and Hot Dog Council conducted a poll in 2005, which found mustard to be the most popular condiment (32 percent). "Twenty-three percent of Americans said they preferred ketchup. [...] Chili came in third at 17 percent, followed by relish (9 percent) and onions (7 percent). Southerners showed the strongest preference for chili, while Midwesterners showed the greatest affinity for ketchup. Nationwide, however, mustard prevailed."[16] Some Americans believe that a properly made hot dog should never be topped with ketchup, since it overpowers and destroys the taste of the hot dog instead of complementing it.[17].
The Coney Island hot dog, which is topped with a special "Coney sauce" (generally a beanless chili), also is a favorite in the US Midwest. Several restaurants in Michigan claim to have invented the Coney dog, which is virtually unknown in Coney Island, New York. It is known in parts of Upstate New York and Québec simply as a "Michigan," and the name stuck to many fast-food meals (namely poutine) that were served with the sauce (although it evolved in Québec more into a meat spaghetti sauce than a chili).

It's a rule in Chicago. No ketchup.
Mustard, relish, onions, celery salt. Options include tomato wedge, sliced dill pickle, sliced cucumber and sport peppers.

Good God, that's worse than the ketchup rule. Show me a man that puts cucumber on a hotdog and I'll show you an effeminate metro-sexual.

Re: Ketchup on a hot dog???
loviesloyals:I'm sure that most of you have heard Mike North rant about people putting ketchup on hot dogs. He even goes as far as calling it un-american. I don't usually do it but every now and then I enjoy a little ketchup on my hot dog. I was just curious about what you guys thought about it.
The only acceptable things to put on a hot dog are mustard and onions.
After you turn 15, hot dogs are not to be eaten. You then turn to Bratwurst with carmalized onions and green peppers.
Oh, and sauce? On a brat? Spicy Brown Mustard if you must...
