Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 6/18
Screw the rookies. This team needs a real back up qb, and a legit wr. Caleb is a joke, lets get real. A free agent from Colardo ST.? Are we not reaching here.
As far a Lovie goes, the season is young and he will be graded at the end of the season. But if we do make a coaching change I would not want MS. I would want Leslie Frazier!
I love my bears, kick Minnesota's as*!

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 1/2
bobbyp:dbears54, quick question for a friend. Sorry if it's already been asked, but I want to get back to him fairly quickly and don't have an hour to read through 9 pages. ;)
Do we currently have the cap space to trade for Brandon Marshall without trading a salary back to the Broncos (ie we'd be sending them draft picks.)
As I said a friend is curious so I thought I'd ask for him.
Thanks....
have the cap space, BUT i'm not so sure bronco's would ever trade with us to help culter get better.. or if another team offers a #1 we are also out

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 1/2
dbears54, your response has made me curious. Why do you say that the Broncos would be opposed to making a fair trade with the Bears, such as trading for Marshall, if it will mean helping Cutler have better stats (get better)? Why would they care?
In fact, I don't recall the specifics, but I believe I heard, as part of the Bears-Broncos Cutler trade, the Bronco's pay the Bears less if Cutler plays better (has better stats). And even if I'm mistaken about that, why would the Broncos care about a Bears' QB stats, any more or less, than any other team's QB who's in different conference than the Broncos?
Yes, I know, in the general emotional public opinion, the Broncos management will "appear they made a good deal" on the Cutler-trade if Cutler is a bust. But really that line of thinking is irrational, in terms of the success of the Broncos. The only thing that really matters to the Broncos' success is how well Orton, and the extra draft picks, do. How well Cutler does is meaningless (except, of course, the terms of the Cutler-trade where the Broncos pay the Bears less if Cutler does well).
But I may be misunderstanding you; so what did you mean by that?

#1. Whether YOu agree or disagree, denver in 2009 and beyond will always compare Cutler vs Orton, and if Cutler has a great year and orton stinks, bronco fans will kill their owner/gm/coach for ever trading Cutler, so the worse cutler does, the better the trade looks for fans. So if someone else is giving you the same as bears for marshall you go with the other team.
#2 there is no "qualitfying" on the trade, its a stright done deal, no change in picks if culter plays good or bad
#3 Again this became PERSONAL witth denver owner, when culter didn't return bowlen's calls, so he despite it not being the right move , traded cutler, IMo he Isn't unless so one sided( and it wouldn't be), to again make anotehr trade with bears to help Culter, I just can't see that happening as long as Bowlen is the owner. If "logic" entered into this Culter isn't a bear.. : )

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 1/2
well i'd say this cemnts the market valie,, between $90-$100 mill for Culter.. and do xpect some deal in october when sure of what space is left to front load it for 2009 and 2010
contract
That didn't take long.
Less than three week after news first broke of the $97.5 million, six-year contract extension that Eli Manning was to receive from the New York Giants, Philip Rivers has cashed in.
Len Pasquarelli of ESPN.com reports that the San Diego Chargers and Rivers, linked forever to Manning because of the trade the 2004 first-round draft picks were involved in, have reached terms on a $92 million, six-year extension. Rivers is to receive a little less than $38.5 million guaranteed. That's about $3.5 million more guaranteed than Manning received.

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 8/25
VicF:dbear54 - What am I missing? As recently as yesterday the beat writers were saying the team has ~$20M in cap space available.... They were talking about lining up a new deal for Cutler and posited it would be wise to use some of the $20M available...
they aren't taking into the account the rookie cap( $4 mill) and culter's 4 mill of LTBE's he has.. add those 2 back and we are very close in numbers.. when we cut down to 53 players we shoudl be the same

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 8/25
Posted by ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert Matthew Stafford continues to sit pretty while Jay Cutler licks his chops. That's the NFC North upshot of the league's latest blockbuster quarterback contract.
If you measure deals based on guaranteed money, Stafford continues to be the league's highest-paid quarterback -- even after San Diego signed starter Philip Rivers to a market-level extension Monday. According to ESPN's Len Pasquarelli, Rivers signed a six-year deal worth $92 million. The contract includes between $38 million and $39 million in guarantees. Regardless of the exact figure, there's no question Rivers fell short of Stafford's NFL-record total of $41.7 million in guarantees. Rivers is the third starting quarterback to sign an extension since Stafford agreed to a six-year deal worth at least $72 million. Kansas City's Matt Cassel signed a six-year deal in July worth $63 million, including $28 million in guarantees. The New York Giants gave Eli Manning a six-year contract worth $97 million, including $35 million in guarantees, earlier this month. Rivers ($15.3 million) and Manning ($16.1 million) will both earn more on an annual basis than Stafford ($12 million). Annual average is an important benchmark for contracts, but so is guaranteed money. And on that point, Stafford's deal continues to outpace the league. It's one thing if the next quarterback contract had surpassed it. But we're now at three deals and counting that haven't reached the $40 million barrier. Here is my updated but unofficial rankings for guaranteed money in the NFL:
- Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford: $41.7 million
- Washington defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth: $41 million
- San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers: $38 million
- Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick: $37 million*
- Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger: $36 million
- New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning: $35 million
- Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan: $34.8 million
- Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning: $34.5 million
- Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell: $31.5 million
- Dallas quarterback Tony Romo $30 million

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 8/25
good news on culter front:
ZachZaidman"We haven't had any formal talks," says Cutler of WR with management. "They know how I feel about it and who I trust."
Sounds like a deal is coming, but both sides being patient.. a good sign..
ZachZaidman"That being said, there's still money and other issues that aren't just how you play on the field," said Cutler of WR competition

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 8/25
Ok, follow this logic...
Bears are likely to use their next #1 pick on a WR
Bears would rather have a top WR now - but dont want to pick up an old slug because their offense (skills) is a YOUNG growing nucleus...
BEST and HIGHEST rated WR in last 2 drafts is Michael Crabtree, many scouts say he could "play immediately" in NFL...
49ers CANT sign Crabtree because he wants top-5 #1 draft money...
Bears would need to aquire AT LEAST a top 5 pick to get a WR like Crabtree, AND bears have the cap-room to pay the top-5 salary...
Niners are rebuilding and would rather not spend on one WR pick because they have a good young nucleus of WR's and only took Crabtree because Al "insane" Davis didnt take him &49ers said Crabtree was JUST TOO GOOD to let pass...
Bears trade their next #1 for Crabtree... Bears get a BETTER #1 than they ever dreamed of and now have a young nucleus of Cutler; Forte; Olson; Crabtree to build with Hester; Bennett, etc) -and Niners get another #1 for growth...
a "win-win?????

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 8/25
In the end, Urlacher received an $18 million, one-year extension through 2012 with $6 million guaranteed in the form of a signing bonus. Let's take a look at his remaining base salaries: Age 31 2009 $5.625 million Age 32 2010 $6.825 million Age 33 2011 $8.025 million Age 34 2012 $7.5 million That's $27.975 million, including the pay he will receive this season. In today's NFL, that's in line with what elite veterans receive. Original negotiations for Urlacher last spring offered him the signing bonus, the $7.5 million in base pay for 2012, and then $1 million in the form of a likely to be earned bonus each season from 2008 through 2011. Urlacher just had to play in 85 percent of the defensive snaps each season to trigger the bonus. Negotiations dragged on, Urlacher threatened to miss minicamp (he didn't) and training camp. It didn't come to that as the team acquiesced in mid-July and simply tacked an extra $1 million on each season without a play-time provision. Urlacher was all smiles, the club was relieved and life moved on.

I'm just guessing, but if you were to compare his numbers right now to what a second round pick would be earning, how much of a difference would that be? Maybe we are paying this kid like a second round pick too.

Its about 2nd round money. forte's deal last year avg just under $1 mill/yr
/2/2008: Signed a four-year, $3.781 million contract. The deal contains $2 million guaranteed, including a $1,533,333 million signing bonus. Another $528,167 is available through incentives, but is unlikely to be earned. 2009: $385,000, 2010: $470,000, 2011: $555,000, 2012: Free Agent. Cap charge: $773,533 (2009). ====================================================
NOW as said in another thread the KEY is 2010, will not have a cap or rookie "slotting".. So i really doubt ANY first or second rounder makes it to camp on time and we have massive holdouts, as no "standard" to base any deal and no agent wants to be the first to sign anyone, so will be an UGLY waitign game . We have holdouts when KNOW what rook's get.. can you imagine what its going to be like w/o the cap and slotting? YUCK
So the other point is we have Culter and Adams learning and doing OTA's. camp etc.. where a rookie woudl not be there gaining experience and chemistry, which as we know the longer they hold out more usless they are their rook years..
Really Think Angelo and Stein being very forward thinking and avoiding the holdouts for known commodities now

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 1/2
dbears54:
we can struture it something like this to take advantange of maybe an uncapped 2010:
100 mill/6 yrs( jsut to keep it at eli's level for arguments sake)
$30 mill SB....
2009 - 3 mill salary $30 mill SB- 8 mill cap #
2010- 20 mill Roster bonus 1 mill salary(change to sb if cap is in for 2010)- $26 mill cap #
2011- 8 mill roster bonus, 3.5 mill sal= 16.5 mill cap #
2012- 8 mill roster bonus, 3.5 mill sal= 16.5 mill cap #
2013-8 mill roster bonus, 3.5 mill sal= 16.5 mill cap #
2014-8 mill roster bonus, 3.5 mill sal= 16.5 mill cap #
got the $30 mill right with a 20 mill guranteed, but looks like they just wanted to do a 2 year and will in a few years do the big contract, good to use the cap space we had
The Bears announced Tuesday night they have extended quarterback Jay Cutler's contract by two years, through the 2013 season, with a reported $30 million in new money, $20 million of which will be paid in guaranteed bonuses.
The 11th overall pick in 2006, who was acquired by the Bears on April 2 in a trade with the Broncos, was just past the halfway point of the six-year, $48 million deal he signed with Denver as a rookie.
With approximately $10 million left under this year's $127 million salary cap, the Bears had some money to spend, and they decided to use it on their franchise quarterback, who had his first 300-yard passing day as a Bear in Sunday's 21-14 loss to the Falcons.

we will be roughly $27 million under, IF had a cap,, but i'd say above 95% it will be uncapped in 2010, but will be capped aagin in 2011, so you need to be "forward thinking" and Budget for THAT.. Ie if you overspent in 2010 signing teh world, you willb e in cap hell in 2011, when it comes back , so its a "balancing" act, and just IMO, most teasm are going to try and keep their contracts as "if" a cap or close to it, so don't have a huge problem in 2011. The media will take about a year to figure this out

Re: OFFICAL 2009 CHICAGO BEARS SALARY CAP THREAD updated 1/2
Cutler was already earning a base salary of $1.035 million this season, meaning he will now carry a cap hit for this season of $11.435 million
By
on October 21, 2009 4:52 PM
It was with a smile that Jay Cutler said congratulations to Eli Manning and Philip Rivers as they pulled down blockbuster contracts this summer, and the Bears quarterback was able to smile about his own deal on Wednesday.
Cutler signed a $30 million, two-year extension Tuesday night that gives him protection against the possibility of a lockout in 2011, something he said is on the minds of all players. The Bears, according to general manager Jerry Angelo, didn't plan on addressing a deal with Cutler during the season as he was signed through 2011 on his rookie contract when they traded for him with the Denver Broncos.
But agent Bus Cook approached the team and they quickly found some common ground that made sense for both parties.
"We felt given the uncertainty of the CBA, given the fact we had the cap room, this was a good time for us because what it does for us is it helps our planning going forward,'' Angelo said. "This will not impede us to not do anything we need to do in free agency moving forward. In fact, it's going to help us now because there's real clarity because Jay was always in the plans. It was just when we were going to do it and how much it was going to ... the cost. All that got resolved in a timely manner.
"We're very very happy with that. I know Jay is happy with that. He made it very clear he wanted to be a Bear. Money was never an issue when we made the trade with him."
Cutler had a $12 million roster bonus due in 2011, money that wasn't guaranteed. In the extension, he moved a lot of money forward in the deal--he'll pocket $16 million this season--and protected himself at a time when no one can predict the future between the owners and players.
"I think every player in the league is probably concerned with that because we don't know what is going to happen, is there going to be a lockout or what's going to happen?'' Cutler said. "You know, the (players association) is advising everyone to save money. So any money you can get before that point is going to be good for any player.''
Here is how the money breaks down in the deal:
2009
$7 million signing bonus $9 million added to his base salary
Cutler was already earning a base salary of $1.035 million this season, meaning he will now carry a cap hit for this season of $11.435 million. That move still leaves the Bears with roughly $5 million in remaining cap room for this season. With $16 million in new money this season, that means Cutler has $4 million in base salary guaranteed moving forward in the contract because $20 million of the $30 million extension was guaranteed.
2010
$7.5 million base salary
2011
$8.1 million base salary
2012
$8.2 million base salary
2013
$8.9 base salary

Seems reasonable. I hope he doesn't try to get it renegotiated again in a couple of years but somehow I don't think he will.
