tommie Harris not waiting for new deal to perform good deeds

Harris not waiting for new deal to perform good deeds

Tommie Harris is set to do some good in his hometown this weekend.

The Bears defensive tackle will be honored at a dinner Friday in Killeen, Texas, where Sara White, the widow of Hall of Fame defensive end Reggie White, will speak.

There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday at the Tommie Harris Fitness Center at the city’s family recreation center. Harris will conduct a free youth football clinic.

So, there you have it, some non-police blotter Bears news that comes from off the gridiron.

Harris is one of a handful of players angling for a new contract this offseason. He’s entering the final year of his rookie contract. Adam Schefter at the NFL Network took an early look at the free agency class of 2009 and put Harris right near the top at No. 3. Of course, those things can change when players work out extensions and others are slapped with the franchise tag at the beginning of next offseason. But Schefter came to the conclusion that it’s a talented bunch, much deeper than this year’s class.

Harris’ agent Drew Rosenhaus visited town this spring in efforts to secure an extension, but that didn’t pan out.

The Bears worked all last spring to get cornerbacks Charles Tillman and Nathan Vasher signed longterm. Both agreed to deals as training camp approached. Look for that to perhaps happen in the case of some of the Bears seeking new deals, including Harris. Training camp is when the threat of injury rises again, and players want that security before they’re putting their future on the line again.

That's good to hear. Things like this always get pushed to the side for the few that have something negative happen. It's funny/sad that this gets no replies and will drop to the 4th,5th page in favor of "Benson is a criminal" and even old stuff like "RMJ is a criminal" or "Tank should be in jail"

Well I hate to be cynical, but I didn't hear about Tommie doing any of this stuff before contract negotiations became active...and McKie knows he better do all he can to stay on this team, although I'm inclined to feel a genuine sense of caring from McKie because he's done benefits for troops before this year...

Its kind of like when Moose started feeling the heat he does the whole adoption thing and all the TV spots...

I don't really believe Harris has a profit motivation here. It's a stretch to believe that doing a public service is somehow going to make the Bears up their offer.

I got to laugh about the Tommie Harris Fitness Center. I know he is inshape, but anytime I see Fitness and a dlineman or o-lineman, it makes me laugh.
Anyway, glad to hear some positive news about Bears players. Harris is a good man. If you look at his trip to the troops, he said it change him. I don;t believe this is about money, but rather about making a difference in another human beings life. I applaud his charity and can only hope Tommie and JA can come to some agreement as training camp approaches. DB, you posted a good article about post June cuts and there affects on the cap. This seems to be a timetable when most extensions get ironed out. The team gets a better understanding of there cap relief not just for this year, but for years to come.

Now whens that first full team minicamp? May 29th? Can't wait.

Re: tommie Harris not waiting for new deal to perform good deeds

Hi guys.  I own the bymyart blog you posted the link for:

    http://bymyart.wordpress.com/2008/05/06/giving-back-to-community-suits-former-ou-football-players-to-a-tee/

Me & my husband adopted Tommie when he lived in Norman and played for OU.  I saw this on my blog stats and after reading some of the posts, wanted to comment.  I never do this...  He doesn't really need defending.  That isn't what I am doing... just wanted to put my 2 cents in.... thats all.

I wanted to say that Tommie Harris is the real deal, for sure.  Getting to know the real Tommie thru the years, and in maintaining our relationship, I can assure you he does the charity work from his heart.  His sister served a year in Iraq!  Left her children at home to serve.  He cares about a lot of things... the kids, the violence, the soldiers serving... He is very compassionate.  There are lots of NFL players out there who do nothing.  Part of why you are hearing about a lot of this stuff recently is because he has an amazing promo agent in Bill Horn, who is so good at putting together events.  He's an amazing guy as well.  Good guy.  He represented Reggie White for years.

Tommie has matured a lot but when he went into the NFL, he was YOUNG!  These guys haven't had a lot of experience in charity type work.  I know lots of those guys spend time with school kids, etc.  doing community work, but most of them dont have a clue as to how to give on a bigger scale.  Cut him a break.   He does a lot of stuff he doesn't talk about... he is a humble guy (putting aside the Tommie you see having fun out there...)  That is his true self.  His family is wonderful and they did well in raising him to be compassionate and giving.  You will see much more great things from Tommie.  There are many things Tommie wants to do for the world to make it a better place.

I used to live in Valpo for several years.  Still have a friend there.  When Tommie was drafted to Chicago, I was talking to her about it.  (...they are huge Bears fans...) and she hadn't heard of him.  I told her SHE WOULD FIND OUT WHO TOMMIE HARRIS WAS!  And she would grow to love him like we do.  Don't doubt Tommie.  He is only human, but what I saw impressed me.  He walks the walk for sure.  He's a good guy and in his heart he wants to do big things but I think for the right reasons.

    Go BEARS!

I post things on Tommie from time to time.  It's an art blog but I have a post where I explain why I have football stuff posted there.  Check it out!

Thanks for posting that DB it's always good to see something nice being said about a Bear again.  Wish more good stories would pop up about our players.  I think Chris Williams and Matt Forte will definately make the news in a good way as opposed to a bad way.  I read somewhere that Forte was planning on donating 10% of his rookie contract to his Church so they can build a youth center.  I couldn't find where I read it but I'll keep my eye out for more news after he signs his deal.
