SI.com's analysis of Kyle Orton for the 2005 draft:

POSITIVES: Heady, intelligent passer with solid intangibles. Patient in the pocket, buys time and waits for receivers to come free. Sees the field, reads the blitz and immediately gets the ball to the hot receiver. Possesses a nice sense of timing, leads receivers in the short field and zips the intermediate passes. Outstanding with the ball fakes, does not release the ball until he has an open receiver and always working to make something positive happen. Takes the safe underneath route if nothing's available rather than forcing the throw.

NEGATIVES: Possesses an elongated/wind-up motion, which slows his release. Cannot drive the deep throw as receivers are constantly slowing down to make the reception. Forces passes downfield on occasion and must improve his long accuracy. Does not always see the field outside of the pocket. Benefits from taking most of his snaps out of the shotgun. Fizzled at the end of his senior campaign and was benched.

I find this to be far more accurate than the pre draft analysis of rex grossman. Orton has such good velocity on his medium ball that it seems weird he has such difficulty throwing deep. The issues with the deep ball have been apparent in '05 and last year as well. Until Orton can demonstrate at least some degree of competence in vertical passing, expect to see that safety creeping ever closer to the LOS.

I didn't know, and find it interesting he was benched as a senior. Also, based on this description, I think that John Shoop would have loved Kyle Orton.

Kyle Orton suffered a hip injury in a game against Northwestern. He wasn't "benched," he was hurt.  The Northwestern game was the only one where his passer rating dipped below 100 (85.6) using the NCAA passer rating formula.  He led the Boilers to a 5-0 start, throwing 18 TDs and only 2 INTs in that streak. 

After sitting injured thru the loss to Iowa and the start of the Ohio State game, Kyle came in and rallied the Boilers to 24-17 win over the Buckeyes.

Kyle was one of the best QBs that Purdue ever had and a top pick to win the Heisman early on in the year, he did not get "benched" for poor play...

Kyle Orton suffered a hip injury in a game against Northwestern. I remember him getting hurt against Northwestern, then he sat out against Iowa. Then as Dennis said against Ohio State, Brandon Kirsch (as usual) was playing like garbage so they put Orton in and won.

This is from an analysis on Orton from USA today : "His hip injury stalled what was first thought to be a Heisman Trophy season during the first half of the 2004 season and further medical evaluation of that injury might be needed..."

And actually dennis, it was 18 TD's and 0 INT's during that 5 game stretch. He finished with 31 TD's and only 5 INT's on the season.

You're missing the rest of the information. He was benched for poor play during that time. The hip injury was minor and not the reason for the benching. Look it up. In fact,t he 'hip injury' excuse was used even though he was showing no ill effects all week in practice, and he left after throwing an INT and losing the 3rd straight game.

It was the benching for poor play that dropped him to the 4th round.

That is what I remember as well although I admit I am no expert on Orton's college career. I thought he was benched for poor performance and the hip injury was minor.

   ----He did this in college.  In the Pro's, there is less time/space to make the throw, so he backs down to the checkdown way too often.  he did it in college against lesser defenses, he does it mre in the pros.  Personally, I do not consider this a strength
2. Possesses an elongated/wind-up motion, which slows his release.  this is a huge problem.  it is the one thing that cannot be coached.  it is what it is.  It is the reason he is innacuate, and it is the reason why his longer passes dont connect,

I agree. The most distressing area of Orton's game is the lack of an accurate deep ball. He has a painfully long wind up and has to put allot of air under the ball which allows defenders to recover. A couple of the deeper passes he threw last year looked downright ugly.

From the Shoop years we know what happens when an offense becomes one dimensional in the passing game.

Two things. If your numbers can go up over 200 in college ratings, then 100 isn't that good. And I'm pretty sick of the 'outdid' or 'outplayed' another QB who has a totally different style of play. Farve is a gunslinger and tried to do that in that weather. Orton is dink and dunk and that is all he did that day. His numbers weren't good.

You people try to use rhetoric to make it seem orton played great. He didn't, Farve just played horrible. Why does every friggen Orton fan compare Orton to the worst games of other players then make these stupid claims.
