    my mock draft...

OK... our needs should be known by every bears-fan: QB, RT, WR and an OG if Buenning doesn't become a starter. Furthermore we could need another onterior lineman to develop for the moment Kreutz retires, and a DE since we only have 3 on our roster right now. The secondary and our LB corps are in good shape although we could need a FS if Mike Brown goes down or even to another team.

So ranking them I would say:
    1. RT (Where are the runs off right tackle? Tait doesn't deserve the money he gets right now)
    2. QB (I'm pretty confident in Orton as you can see)
    3. WR (We lack a playmaker next to Hester, who's not going to develop into a #1. Lloyd is a #2)
    4. OG (Beekman, Buenning, Garza... Looks good, but depth anyone?)
    5. DE (Anderson is only a pass-rusher, we need a complete backup and a guy who can step up when Ogunleye starts to decline)
    6. C/OG (Kreutz isn't as good as he was two years ago)
    7. FS (I don't like Steltz at all... he looks like the next Archuleta)
    8. Swing OT (St.Clair could be leaving for a starting job somewhere else)

And assuming we make the playoffs and survive the first round, we could pick 25th. With an additional 3rd round selection for Berrian and a 6th round pick for Ayanbadejo, we would have 9 selections.

1st round: Alex Boone, OT, Ohio State: The draft class is very deep at the OT-position (Oher, Smith, Monroe, Black, Loadholt), so a talented player like Boone falls to 25. He replaces Tait immediately.

2nd round: Nate Davis, QB, Ball State: A very talented player with a lot of potential. He can do everything he is asked to do. Finally a real "franchise QB"...

3rd round: Kraig Urbik, OG, Wisconsin: Well... we don't have ANY depth at guard. Metcalf is not a NFL-caliber guard and we don't know much about Buenning. You see it's all about O-Line.

3rd round (compensatory): Aaron Kelly, WR, Clemson: A big target for Orton/Davis. Give him some time, let him develop and gain some muscles and he'll be a big time possesion receiver.

4th round: Antwain Robinson, DE, Arkansas: He plays stout against the run and can rush the passer, too. Reminds me a bit of Alex Brown.

5th round: Dace Richardson, OT, Iowa: He is injury-prone which makes him drop this far.

6th round: Brennan Southerland, FB, Georgia: He blocks for Knowshon Moreno and does it well. You see it at Moreno's numbers.

6th round (compensatory): David Bruton, FS, Notre Dame: We still lack depth at the safety-position. Bruton is a big guy who benefitted of playing next to Zbikowski last year.

7th round: Ronnie Palmer, ILB, Arizona: Special teams are very important in Chicago. He could contribute right away and also push for playing time at LB.

    Roster:

    QB:Orton, N. Davis, Hanie
    RB: Forte, Wolfe, Peterson
    FB: Southerland
    LWR: Lloyd, Bennett, Kelly
    RWR: Hester, R. Davis. Booker
    TE: Clark, Olsen, K. Davis
    LT: C. Williams, Richardson
    LG: Beekman, Urbik
    C: Kreutz, Beekman
    RG: Buenning, Garza
    RT: Boone, Richardson

    LDE: Ogunleye, Robinson
    DT: Harris, Harrison, Idonije
    NT: Dvorachek, Adams, Harrison
    RDE: A. Brown, Anderson
    SLB: Hillenmeyer/Roach
    MLB: Urlacher, Palmer
    WLB: Briggs, J. Williams, McClover
    LCB: Tillman, Graham
    RCB: Vasher, McBride
    Nickel: McGowan, Manning
    SS: Payne, McGowan, Steltz
    FS: M.Brown, Bruton

    LS: Mannelly
    K: Gould
    P: Maynard

    Re: my mock draft...

if there was a stud reciever or guard  that fell to us in the second i would pull the trigger before getting a quarter back in the 2nd. or even trade up to the middle or top of the second for one

    Re: my mock draft...

I agree with your thought process. The only real thing I would change is I think we will try to get a WR in FA because we don't have time to develop one. So I would go OT, QB, OG, DE. The rest i'm in line with though.

    Re: my mock draft...

the problem is that there aren't any good receivers in FA besides roy williams who most likely will be franchised. lee evans was just signed and tj houshmandzadeh will be a bengal for sure...

so developing one is the only chance. maybe we get a talent like desean jackson who can step up in his rookie year

    Re: my mock draft...

I really like it, except for the Dace Richardson pick.  He's a talented player, but he's had entirely too many ankle and knee injuries as a college player to make me believe he'll be able to play well (at all?) as a pro.  But since OT works so well in that spot, how about Sean Sester or Garrett Reynolds?

i just think that richardson has a higher ceiling than sester. and reynolds will get picked earlier that the 5th round

I'm pretty sure that Williams wont be franchised. For one he's already talking about not wanting to be there. I don't know that we have a shot at him or TJ Houshmanzada. But I doubt either of those guys resign with their teams. And there's the possiblity of Boldin though we'd have to give up picks probabaly.

he WILL get franchised and then shopped somewhere else. but i think that we don't have the cap room to pay him the franchise tag

    Re: my mock draft...

There will be no trade market for him if they franchise. From my understanding you have to give up 2 first round picks if you sign a franchise player after he's been franchise. That just isn't going to happen for any team. There's talks he may be traded before the season is even over.

Either way, it's an option we may or may not have. We wont know until after the season.

    Re: my mock draft...

Alex Boone in the first ?! Have you seen the guy against good competition like UF, LSU, USC ? There should be better guys available if you're looking for a lineman early. How about Fenuki Tupou in the 2nd ? Max Unger ? Alex Mack ? Ciron Black, Duke Robinson, or even Herman Johnson ? I think i'd take any of those guys before I took Boone.

Conference of One: The USC Trojans were well represented on the first day of the 2008 NFL Draft, with seven overall selections in the first 2 rounds. In comparison, the twelve teams from the SEC combined had just eight players drafted on day 1.
