Steve McMichael & the Hall of Fame...

Why isn't he ever talked about?

At 95 sacks he is [ as far as I could find ] 2nd all time only to Warren Sapp [ 96.5 ] at the DT postion.

Further comparisons to Sapp show that Mongo was more productive...MUCH more.

McMichael had 838 career tackles in 213 games... Sapp only 573 in 198.

McMichael averaged 90 tackles per year over a 8 year span when you throw out the scab year and the 90 season when he was injured for half the season [and he still had 71 tackles!]

Sapp NEVER had 50 tackles in a season.

McMihael had 3 safeties in his career, Sapp had none.

Other stats like forced and recovered fumbles, and TD's are not worth mentioning as they are very similar.

Why is he not in the Hall of Fame?

Who was better?   Joe Greene...Randy White...Merlin Olsen....Alan Page.....?  They are all in the HOF.

    Your thoughts?

Dent should be in right now, and how could Covert be on the all decade team and never get a mention for the HOF.

McMichael should be in the Hall of Very Good. He was never an elite DL like Page or Joe Greene or Reggie White. He didn't command consistent double and even triple teams like those guys. He could not turn a game around like those players. He never placed on the NFL DPOY list. He was an essential cog and a terrific player but only a Bear's homer would even bring this up.

so when he retired he was the leader in sacks by a DT.
I dont think that was looked into because Sacks just started becoming recorded in 1982

That's true.  Page and Greene both had over 130 by all accounts but still... The stat is the stat.  If Sapp goes in, McMichael is a legitamate arguement cuz his body of work is better.

Re: Steve McMichael & the Hall of Fame...

One thing to keep in mind, McMichael had Dent, Hampton, and Perry also on that line. Now if you were facing that D-line who you going to give the double team blocks to?

Re: Steve McMichael & the Hall of Fame...

I personally doubt that McMichael will ever make the Hall of Fame despite his stats ! As someone pointed out already Hampton and Dent certainly did not hurt McMichael .

To the original poster in my opinion the best defensive tackle of All -Time ,is Merlin Olsen . Page , Greene , Bob Lilly , and our own Dan Hampton also deserve mentioning .

Re: Steve McMichael & the Hall of Fame...

I don't think McMichael was ever the best the DT in the NFL in any year.  Good no doubt.  I think anyone that gets into the HOF has to have at least one season where they were talked about as the best player at their position in the NFL.   Just my rule :-)

Thats also the problem I have with people saying Bettis is a lock for the HOF, I don't think there ever even 1 year where he was considered the best RB in the NFL.  Even in his best year he was always the 2nd or 3rd best RB, and in his other years he probably wasn't in the top 5 discussion for that season.

Re: Steve McMichael & the Hall of Fame...

As I said I doubt that McMichael ever Makes the Hall of Fame , but if they went by your criteria alone Just Win Baby there would be alot of Hall of Famers that should have never made the Hall of Fame . I will give you just ten guys who were never the best guys at there possitions in any one year but are clear cut Hall of Famers Lenny Dawson ,Fred Biletnikoff ,Bob Griese ,Charlie Joiner ,Sonny Jurgensen ,Bobby Layne ,Bobby Mitchell ,Joe Perry ,and Joe Namath !
