I have to agree with you.  When I worked in Chicago I used to go to the Al's on Taylor St at least once a  week for a combo.  They are very tasty.

Last year I was in town for the Bucs and Eagles games and stayed at Hotel71(not a real god choice) anyhow we went to a place about 3 blocks north of the river and about 7 blocks west of Michigan, It was on a corner. Anyone know what place I maybe talking about? It was highly recomended and VERY busy, But the sausage sub was just OK.

    THANKS

    mmmmm.... beefy goodness

I swear Italien Beef sandwiches are the reason I come to visit Chicago.
okay, so the art, the architecture, the sports teams and a few other food choices are good reasons as well

Oh, and I have to agree with what was posted up above -- just pick any corner shop.  I can tell you the best sammich I ever had was at some dumpy looking corner restaurant that looked like a complete and total dive.  couldn't remember the name of it to save my life.... I do remember is up somewhere around Diversey not too far off the lake, but that's about all I can remember.

I know Portillos is considered too much of a chain to be the real true-chicago Italien Beef... but they do have a pretty nice package you can order and get delivered.  not bad considering I can't get anything else even remotely like it out in Jersey.

Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us.

It's just look so different than the Cheesesteaks we have here, I didn't like sushi either, but love it now.

It is different.  Italian beef is quite a bit spicier than the east coast cheesesteaks I believe.  And then if you add giardinerra peppers to it?  Whoo!  My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

That might be Al's, but why would you go to a place that has "#1 Italian Beef" on it's logo and get a sausage sub?  That'd be like going to a place in New England that is famous for it's seafood and ordering a hamburger and saying "it was just okay".

Luke's Homemade Italian Beef at 215 W Jackson is pretty good.

I have to say that the best Italian Beef I ever had was in the suburbs at a place called Johnny's Beef. It was near Elk Grove Village, I think.

Johnnie's Beef is in Arlington Heights.  I think there is another one somewhere else though.  Their combo sandwich is the best beef sandwich around in my opinion.  It's even better than Al's.

I think there are better beef sandwiches than Al's.  I was just trying to help the guy find a good beef sandwich that is relatively close to where he will be staying.

Portillos is true CHICAGO BEEF. Hell the guy started as a 1 man shop in Chicago or burbs and made his beef in the BATH TUB !!! Doesn't get much more ma and pop than that. It has GROWN into a huge CHAIN because it is good. It is still authentic.

    Re: Italian Beef sandwich

Portillos is good. I like Portillos for hot dogs and Italian Beef sort of the same as how I like Rosati's for pizza. It's good and you can find them all over, but there are others that I like better.
