    Cover 2

Does anyone remember when Bill Walsh started using the west coast offense? It was tough to defend against at first but the league caught on and it wasnt as effective anymore. Do you think the same has happened with the tampa 2 D? It doesnt dominate like it did for Tony D in tampa all those years ago. The current trend seems to be a 3-4. I cant help but think with our LB's we could rock with a 3-4

    Re: Cover 2

I am all for the 3-4. The Wildcat is just the beginning. Offense in the NFL is about to explode with all sorts of innovations that will be causing all kinds of match up problems for defenses. We are going to have to defend two QB`s in the backfield at the same time. We are going to have to defend one or two offensive linemen receivers on the same play, or two or three tight ends against safeties and corners. We will have to be able to put 6-7 defensive backs, or 4-6 linebackers on the field to have a chance of stopping some of the things to come. Defensive linemen won`t be able to give chase to smaller receivers when there are five eligible receivers on the field, and the QB or QB`s are in the shotgun, or to the right or left of the wildcat RB, and an extra step or two behind the line of scrimmage so the defense can`t get to them before they can get rid of the ball. This is going to present big problems for teams that are unprepared for it. We need to start building now, in order to cope with these challenges on the field. The NFL is changing, many if not all defenses will be obsolete. Offense is going to rule! That is why we are going to need more than one or two good linemen. We are going to need linemen that can catch the ball, maybe even throw it? We will want 6 or 7 linemen on the field for our power running sets, plus a super sized TE or FB to match up with 8 in the box. We want to be able to give the defense more than they can handle. That is what other teams will be trying to do. A 3-4, with 3 solid defensive linemen, would seem to be most practical to deal with all of this, and have the best chance of success.

    Re: Cover 2

Im really shocked that no teams have incorporated a gameplan to get two Qbs on the field at the same time.

Seems like a double shotgun set with two Legit Qbs could give defenses some problems.

    Re: Cover 2

Last year allot of teams were doing a 2 QBs on the field attack play, Baltimore did it several times, but not many teams had a QB to do it with.

BTW the West coast offense still exists, it hasn't been caught up too, it is slightly changed but Holmegreen took the West Coast offense and all his underlines like Mooch and Gruden ran it, New England has a similar west coast base offense too.

A more accurate depiction would be the Bears old D, the 46 D which was beaten and gotten rid of because of the west coast offense entirely which could create short timed passes to get the ball out quick and not rely on the run game which just chewed up a 46 D.

Cover 2 will still exist for some years and is actually the best setup to stop a wildcat offense. But the thing that would stop it from working is if any NFL teams started pulling out full on spread offense attacks, if your loading up receivers in bunches allot and routes that are set to get zone players out of position it can defeat a cover 2.  But if you have a good pass rush it doesn't matter what you do against a cover 2, all your gonna get is little oppertunity. Thats why it might never be phased out, it might be less of a base D but its always played. Even Pitsburg often plays  cover 2 zone out of their 3-4 D

    Re: Cover 2

The problem is we do not get to the QB when we blitz our LBs now. If you do not do that in the 3-4 you are dead. Do not forget we have to play Adrian Peterson two times and the 3-4 is easier to run on if you do not have the right type of D-lineman.

    Re: Cover 2

I read about the A-11 offense which is mainly done in high school I think, where all 11 players are eligible receivers. There are modifications in the college game, but no more than 5 eligible receivers are allowed in the NFL. What this has done however, is open the minds of coaches in the NFL to the possibilities within NFL limitations, plus players and coaches who have played such offense will improvise their own variations of it when they get to the NFL. Sooner or later, in one form or another, or many forms and variations of the A-11 influence will befuddle and doom the teams that aren`t prepared/ready for it. The Bears will probably be one of them. So what else is new?

Perhaps your right, I still like the cover 2, but if teams have figured it out, it might be time to change.

    Re: Cover 2

Exactly! We get Terrance Cody for nose tackle next draft and all three linemen can demand double teams. Then you get 5-6 premium linebackers like the Patriots have done, and you keep the score down. For us, in addition to that, we get two big safeties, and Peterson won`t be going through the middle with Cody there, whatever side he runs to, there will be plenty of heavy hitters to put the bruises on him and limit or shut down his production, but we also need the shut down corner to negate the Berrian factor. Same goes for the Packers. Nothing else is, or can be important if we can`t take care of our divisional problems.

    Re: Cover 2

Cover 2 only works well when your front four produce consistent pressure.... and we stunk it up last year. IMHO i think if it happens again this year its time to switch 3-4 but good luck convincing lovie. Marinelli is a great coach ill take sapp's word for it, but it feels like a band-aid on a gushing wound. Hope that Dline does well this year GO BEARS!!!

    Re: Cover 2

I think your right the cover two should be called the easy six nowadays. I know they only play it part of the time but having urlacher 20 yards downfeild out of the play is stupid. I feel we need more blitzing to stir things up, I mean our sack totals from last year were pathetic..
