Anyone Disappointed in the Gaines Adams Deal?

We gave up a 2nd round pick for this guy. Does this mean that we are just going to let Agounlye go? And if so, Adams looks skinny. He needs to bulk up. When we need so much help on the O-Line and other positions, why are we not keeping our draft picks? I would have liked to see us either keep Agoun, or sign Aaron Kapman from Green Bay. But instead, we give away our 2nd rounder for a guy who is a whisper away from being a bust.

Did I mention that we do not draft on the first day next year?

He's barely played, I think it's way too early to know about him yet?

Re: Anyone Disappointed in the Gaines Adams Deal?

He's going to be playing more as the season goes on and play A LOT next season. DE was going to be an issue we needed to solve. Getting Adams solved that. He has been just as productive as Ogunleye in 07 and 08 and he will not make a whole lot of money. They plan on signing guys in FA, not spending too much money on early draft picks.

Re: Anyone Disappointed in the Gaines Adams Deal?

Gaines will be just fine. Currently he is getting some schooling and learning plays. Next year he will enter the boot camp of Marrinelli and his techniques will be refined. If Adam does show anything next year, then he is a bust.

Until then, crying about the OL has nothing to do with Gaines, unless someone can identify a guard or tackle that was a available now. A second round G or T isn't a quarantee of being a success, but will be more expensive that a 3rd or 4th round pick.

“He came back with a touchdown, and caught another one when we were going in for the second touchdown. It’s going to happen. I’m going to miss throws. I’m going to throw interceptions. Guys are going to miss blocks. We just have to keep playing fast and get over it as soon as possible.” Jay Cutler

JamesH, glad to see that you are so in touch with the Bears front office. You are a great talent evaluator for being an armchair GM.

A 2nd round pick is one of the most valuable commodities in the NFL. The Bears could have gotten more for the pick. Randy Moss went to the Patriots for 4th round pick. Gaines Adams will not be an impact player that Moss is.

im not disappointed in nothing.what can the kid do,it not like he going to come in here and steal somebody starting job during the season.he just going have to wait his turn and yes he does need to bulk up because he needs that upper body strenght.

The Patriots got Randy Moss for s 4th because the Raiders are idiots and Moss looked to be on the decline and had a poor attitude while in Oakland. You are also comparing a WR to a DE, which is funny considering you are calling someone else an armchair QB and insulting their "talent evaluation." The fact that you are judging the trade based on a couple of games despite the fact that he hasn't played and won't play much until next season shows that you shouldn't be insulting anyone about "talent evaluation."

Lol. You knew these threads were going to surface after a week or two...

If Adams was going to come in here and make an immediate impact, the Bucs wouldn't have traded him in the first place! Marinelli may be the best dline coach in the nfl, but even he doesn't possess magical fairy dust to turn any avg player into a impact player overnight... Come on guy.

AND PEOPLE - quit comparing every trade to the Moss trade! That was a one-in-a-million deal where Moss was coming off a season where he had Rashid Davis-type numbers and was a horrible teammate and locker room guy.

If you thought we made the trade to bring in a guy to make an immediate impact, you have absolutely no knowledge of anything related to football... period

too early to be disappointed. this guy has a lot of potential and a cheap contract. with our new d-line coach we might actually be able to coach him up and get him to play up to potential; so... no.

Re: Anyone Disappointed in the Gaines Adams Deal?

Well I'm not disappointed....Heck having Adams allows me to move Alex Brown to DT in Madden 2010 and that makes for a pretty nice D Line if I do say so myself. :D

I'm pleased with the move.  Let's just see how he performs over the next few seasons before we get critical.

We brought him in for a good reason. How does a team with 1 D end sound?

With an uncapped year looming we didn't wanna get stuck in a position where we had to drastically overpay to resign our guys or someone elses. Now at worst we have Adams and Brown. That means we only need to sign 1 DE instead of 2 (assuming we go with 3 DE's to start the season like we did this year). With salaries unchecked and a lot of other needs it was a good move.

I'm not disappointed in the Gaines Adams Deal seeing that DE was going to be a top priority in next years draft.

Re: Anyone Disappointed in the Gaines Adams Deal?

I'm dissapointed because we drafted Gilbert and we lose a 2nd rounder. It looks like now the option to sign and trade Ogunleye isnt available and we'll get nothing for him. I think Gaines Adams should fit well here but will be sad to see Ogunleye go.

    The next "Dan Bazuin".......

The thing that has me really confused is that Gaines Adams was a really high draft pick, he showed absolutely nothing with Tampa Bay, I mean nothing but AVERAGE PLAY....

We already had that with our current Rookie "Jarron Gilbert" and "Henry Melton" I might add....

So the trade doesn't seem to add up to making any kinda sense, some people can claim this was about Ogunleye, but then I think we're forgetting about Gilbert and Melton........

I'm gonna hold back judgement on Adams play on the field, but I will say, this trade will never make sense.......surprise [*sur*]

I dont mind picking up a player like Adams but when there are so many holes in this team we need those draftpicks. Sad to see us use a 2nd round pick on this risk.

I think the Adams deal tells you all you need to know about what they think about Gilbert and Melton.

Although, if they consider Gilbert and undertackle, and don't think they will sign Ogun or Anderson, then you could see the logic.

    Pot meet Kettle.

You call James an armchair GM in one sentence, then your very last sentence makes you just as guilty of being one too.

I don't know where I stand on this deal, I haven't seen him play.

I believe he is probably going to replace Ogunleye. I'm disappointed in the hype about Marinelli making the D-line better.

The defense finished 21st last season. It is currently 12th. It's been a good defense for just about every game except the Bengals game, where Lovie just got plain ol' schooled by the Bengal OC, when he got caught flat footed in his formations and game plan. Lovie took forever to adjust to what the Bengals were doing (2 TE sets, power run game with Benson, roll out passes by Palmer), almost a quarter and half to finally 8 box the line, and by that time, the Bears were down by three scores.

I DO see an improvement on this D from last season. If everybody in here is comparing this D to what it was in '05 and '06, you will be disappointed...we'll probably never see that combination of talented players, at that age, in that system again. But compared to where the D has played the past two seasons, I'm not disappointed at all. They are very much improved.

Re: Anyone Disappointed in the Gaines Adams Deal?

I'd rather we didn't give up a 2nd rounder for him when we have gaping needs elsewhere.  But if he plays well and contributes for years to come, it'll be worth it.

This is one of those "wait and see" deals.  We knew he wasn't going to come in and pay dividends right away.

When you say nothing, what exactly do you mean?  Oh, you must mean that Adams had 1/2 sacks less than Terrell Suggs during the 2007 and 2008 seasons.  How about Adams has more sacks than any other Dlineman  in his draft class except LaMarr Woodley.  Had more sacks in 2007 and 2008 than Alex Brown and had 3 few than Ogun for the same time period.
Finally, this trade was made to strategically position the Bears for the future.  They get a young guy with exceptional ability with years let on his rookie deal.  So, worse case the Bears go into next season with Adams, Brown, Anderson and Melton at the DE spot.  An exceptional GM once said " you never pass an opportunity to add a high quality passer or pass rusher".  Angelo was implementing a credo from his mentor Ernie Accorsi.
