L.A. Vikes? no new stadium on horizen..
An interesting twist worked its way through Minnesota’s efforts to secure a new stadium Tuesday. It’s a pretty complicated bureaucratic issue, but Jay Weiner of MinnPost explains the bottom line here. Essentially, the commission that owns and operates the Metrodome has asked the Vikings to drop their primary leverage -- the 2011 expiration of their lease -- in exchange for financial breaks at the stadium. That would come in the form of extending their lease at the Metrodome while seeking local options for new construction. If they do not extend, the commission proposes to reinstate rent charges that were dropped earlier this decade. Vikings officials were livid with the request and called the offer a “non-starter.” A team spokesman said owner Zygi Wilf was “outraged” that the commission is seeking to extend its time in the Metrodome rather than working toward financing and building a new facility.

Re: L.A. Vikes? no new stadium on horizen..
haha. Stupid vikings. Whats funny its actually guys like Jarred Allen and Kevin Williams who are a big part of the problem in getting a new stadium. I live in MN and know a lot of people who want this team gone. People are losing there jobs losing there houses. And they dont think they should help pay for a new stadium. And they go to St. Paul talking about how Allen has 3 DUIs and Williams beats women and they refuse to spend there tax $ on millionairs who act that way.
On top of that. Think about it. Wilf is a new york bussiness man. Very smart thats how he became so rich. Why would he spend 200 or 300 million helping pay for a new stadium here that wont even be able to put 70,000 in the seats. When he can go to LA have a huge market and put 90,000 in the seats every Sunday. And i dont think he has to help pay at all for that stadium. From a finacial standpoint it makes sense for him to get to LA asap. No matter what he tells the Viking fans. Its commen sense his dream is to get this team to LA. Just like all offseason he said he didn't want Farve. He's going to tell the fanbase base what they want to hear. But he's already making a plan to go.
Im sure glad the bears fanbase doesn't suck so that way we can stay in Chicago forever.

We will probably get new Vikings fan signed up here if the team moves to L.A. That's OK. They would have to be smarter than the Viking clowns who post here now.

I would laugh if they left. But from a purely rivalry perspective, I would hate to have that happen.

Re: L.A. Vikes? no new stadium on horizen..
This stood out to me:
"In some ways, the audience seems to be the National Football League and its moguls, as the commission shows it is rolling up its sleeves and trying to make things happen. And the audience is the Minnesota taxpayers, too, who, it seems, aren't willing to pull a new $1 billion stadium out of a state budget that's headed for record deficits."
This attitude hasn't changed in the last 15 years since I began talking about the issue with my relatives there - they are NOT going to dig into the taxpayers pockets without a fight - people there have had it. How on Earth are they going to compete with a large market willing to have a new state of the art stadium ready for them when they land there (L.A.)?

yep and ziggy has no ties to minny or history there, he's as you said a New yorker and about $$ if he doesn't get a stadium AS A BUSINESSMAN, no matter the rhetoric, he IMO would move them and make the team worth $200 mill MORE the 2nd he got to L.A. with a favorable stadium deal, and much larger market
and NO businessman scoffs at losing $200 mill, esp if he can't get a new stadium

Jacksonville is more likely to leave instead of us. Vikes stadium plans just came at a bad time as we just built the Twins and the Gophers new stadiums. And with the down economy, money is tighter than usual.
I still believe this will be resolved. I don't believe we will lose another Purple and Gold team to the snobs in LA.

think from an NFL perspective, the LA vikes to the NFC west and rams to NFC north makes the most sense from a geographical and easiest move.. have ariz, seattle, san fran and vikes.. and bears, packers, rams and lions in north

Re: L.A. Vikes? no new stadium on horizen..
What's kind of funny is that the Lakers used to be in Minneapolis ("the city of lakes"). The Lakers have gone on to win many championships while the T-wolves, well, suck. Likewise the Stars have done well since leaving Minnesota, while the Wild, well, suck. It would make me laugh to see them lose three pro sports franchises, two to the same town.
On another note, in the mid '90s there was a successful drive to amend the city charter to require a referendum if any city money was proposed for a private stadium. Not sure how the twinks got around that one.

How exactly will it be resolved? There have been plenty of reasons why they could move discussed in this thread - don't just stick your head in the sand and assume it won't happen. This is the NFL; it is a business first, and if Zygi (sp.?) gets a new stadium and better revenue stream somewhere else, he'll jump on it. Why wouldn't he? I think the Twin Cities screwed themselves out of a near certain shot at keeping the Vikings when they built new stadiums for the Gophers and Twins in a down economy. I've lived in that town before - people did not want to spring for a new stadium for them in the late 90s, and that was before the two new stadiums for the other teams. Sure Jacksonville might be more likely to move (what a mess they are), but the Vikings and the Twin Cities had a chance to lock up a relationship in the last 10 years, and didn't, mostly because of people with your "oh, it will eventually get done" attitude - that will create tremendous uncertainty in the next couple of years and could lead to a move.

Agree, the league is due for a couple of division changes, but one like this would be easy to due just like you said. Technically, it would be a win win, the Vikes would have that division to themselves and we would be battling only GB...oh, the possibilities!

That doesn't necessarily change. How many years did the old divisions have teams in divisions that made no geographical sense?

It wouldn't be quite the same without the border state rivalry aspect.

Weird - I had posted something about public stadium financing and it got deleted. Not sure if I'm being moderated or maybe VikingValor is - I was responding to him. Looks like a chunk of this thread has gone bye bye.

Yep. Both of my replies got deleted, with no explanation why. I guess name calling is tolerated in this thread since the first 10 posts are still here, but stating facts and debating stadium issues arent.

Re: L.A. Vikes? no new stadium on horizen..
Vikings turn up heat over stadium
The team, bidding for a new field, questioned "the future of this franchise" in a standoff over extending its Dome lease.
In the clearest sign that the Minnesota Vikings are drawing a line in the sand over a new stadium, the team abruptly broke off relations Wednesday with the Metrodome's owners over plans to play there after the next two years.
Vikings owners Zygi and Mark Wilf sent a strongly worded letter to the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission that said they were "shocked, exasperated and extremely disappointed" by the commission's attempt to keep the Vikings at the Dome beyond 2011, when the team's lease expires.

HILARIOUS...
IHTBs will love this. On another thread, within 10 seconds of thinking about the possible move, I suggested the exact same "re-alignment" as DB....
HILARIOUS, yet I can recognize that we actually have an agreed upon thought.
HILARIOUS.

yeah, but back on subject, do think this is far from a "done deal" that vikes stay, esp if no new stadium.. they can't sell it out now.. have low tv ratings and one of the lowest revenue teams in league.. both bears and packers have to cut checks to them each year as part of the revenue sharing in NFL..

As I posted before on this topic, the collapse of the I-35w highway/bridge took alot of air out of this balloon about a new stadium anywhere around st.paul / minny. My source tells me the state took a big hit financially and the tax payers are not going to foot the bill for a new stadium. Its up to private investors or a corporation to rescue this situation but dont hold your breath.

why would a private investor or corp help wilf?? that makes no sense.the idea of the state is you get tax incentives(which a corp can't give you) and tax breaks in addition to havingthem pay a large %, becuase adds jobs, business etc etc..Wilf has the money to do it himself, that isn't the issue, the issue is tax breaks AND havin a state pay large percentage.. which if minny doesn't do, L.A. or somewhere else will

Somebody told me the new Gophers stadium is expandable. So that if the financing could be arranged to add seats the Queens could play there. Anyone else hear that?
