Who exactly in the EU voted for this guy?

    Democracy...Republic....?  I think not.

EU names Belgian PM Van Rompuy as first president

"European Union leaders named Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy, who is little known outside his own country, as the bloc's first president....."

They always feel bad for Belgium.

Every time Germany invaded France it had to go through Belgium to get there.

    0.

We don't have nearly the interdependence in North America that is present in Europe.  If Canada and Mexico both went in the crapper, we would be fine.  In Europe, there are actually decent reasons for them to unionize.  Now, they should be very careful, and keep it to a minimum, but, there is an argument for it.

    Its a totally different situation.

Europe is simply trying to unite their member countries (United/Union) like our states did a couple centuries ago. Just think state here, country there. Some members are really big with large populations and others not so much, just like states here.

Its a smart move if they can pull it off, but history suggest its very unlikely they can. Either way it has been, and should continue to be, interesting to watch. They've been working on it for a long time.

My money is on the German guy causing trouble. And I can't wait to see what happens when/if Turkey gets accepted.
